I Tweeted all this earlier, but thought I was actually making a reasonably valid point, so I’m just basically going to copy those Tweets, edit out the joins and #DoctorWho hashtags, maybe add a little bit, and then pass it off as a blog post.
*ahem*
Here’s a thought that occurred earlier today, after reading about the disappointment/outrage of Doctor Who fans after we only got those two stings and a hashtag (and no trailer) last night. [#SaveTheDay – a hashtag which, as Andrew Ellard pointed out, is actually longer than just adding #DoctorWho to the end of a Tweet.]
Would we be so bothered about there being no trailer if the other one hadn’t already been shown a couple of months ago (no matter in which country it was shown, that’s not the point I’m making)? I mean, The Day of The Doctor won’t be on for another eight weeks yet. Two months.
If we weren’t still so het up about not seeing that trailer, and if the stings hadn’t been so hyped up, their appearance last night would arguably have been a welcome and even exciting surprise. That trailer being shown at San Diego Comic-Con, however, changed everything. A sting or teaser would have been great if it was six weeks prior to the Anniversary. But knowing that that trailer even existed got us all whipped up into a frenzy.
You do have to wonder Who’s more foolish – us or the BBC?
*end of Tweet rehashing*
I’ve had replies for both parties, one suggesting Auntie Beeb, pointing out that “You don’t pre-publicise the unveiling of hashtags.” And the other, which I’m actually more inclined to agree with, which suggests it’s us. The Fans. “We all know it deep down,” it reads. And it’s right.
We are the fools. The BBC may be idiots when it comes to giving fans exciting surprises, misguided at best; Announcements of announcements (the announcement of which had actually been accidentally announced around twelve hours previously, and came as a surprise to nobody), promising a midnight surprise in the aftermath of “Trailer-gate” (as absolutely no-one called it), only to give us a photo of some Daleks.
But We are the fools. Because we always fall for it. And, sadly, we always will.
