Every year, Kryten looks a little (or a lot) different. Let’s have a little look…
(oh, that’s smaller than I thought it’d be. It was a lot bigger on Paint.)
Following on from yesterday’s rediscovery of Is There A Doctor On Board?, I thought I’d share with you the other bits and bobs I found in the folder. Most of them date from between 1997-99, a couple from earlier, a couple later.
First off, there are my individual character portraits of the crew (felt tip pens have never been my friend)…
Then, there’s an early sketch of Rimmer…
And another strip, which I couldn’t decide whether to do it in black and white or colour. Tried both, neither really worked. (The title referred to the fact that I had intended Elvis to turn up at some point)
Assorted ships and machines…
…mechanoids and cast members…
…more Red Dwarf mash-ups with popular culture…
…a magazine article…
…and stuff from the offices of Grant Naylor Productions, signed photos and whatnot. Including a patient response to one of my begging letters regarding being an extra in the Red Dwarf movie.
So there. A few oddities for you all to marvel over.
I don’t live at that address anymore, by the way, so any threatening letters will not reach their intended target.
Longer ago than I care to remember, I had a big bag full of Red Dwarf stuff. All my original copies of Red Dwarf Smegazine, from issue 4 (April 1992) onwards were crammed in there, as well as a number of my doodles and ‘proper’ drawings.
The bag disappeared a few years ago. I still hunt for it occasionally, even though there’s nowhere else in the house left to look. I do have a full set of Smegazines – bought in an auction at a Red Dwarf convention in 2002 – but the rest of the stuff…God knows where it is.
I’ve found the odd scan occasionally, or even a scrap here and there, and shoved most of them on my DeviantArt profile.
But at Christmas, I got a laptop. I finally got a laptop of my own for the first time. And my sister wrung out her hard drive to gift me every folder, file and document I’d ever saved on that there laptop of hers. And amongst a folder named “Old Red Dwarf Gubbins”, I found the whole of my “Is There A Doctor On Board?” strip, intended for The Red Dwarf Fan Club magazine Better Than Life. Two and a half pages are over at DeviantArt, but here is the whole lot (Well, all of what I completed – I never got round to drawing the last couple of panels).
All this, of course, was written before the 2005 return of Doctor Who. So this was actually one of the first times I drew the TARDIS.
I started it in 2001, and scanned what I had in 2003 and put it on a Geocities Website. That stuff was archived a long time ago, and proved impossible to find. I did obviously manage to find those first couple of pages, that I put on DeviantArt, but finding this lot this evening has made my day.
I have a profile on Art sharing website DeviantART. I have almost 140 pieces of artwork on there, and, in an attempt to make a little bit of money, have decided to make some of them available to buy in a variety of forms.
There are Fine Art Prints, Photo Prints, Canvases, Greeting Cards, Postcards, Mousemats, Mugs, Coasters, Fridge Magnets and even the odd Jigsaw Puzzle.
Not all pieces are available in every format – some of the drawings are simply too small, and therefore not of high enough definition for some of the larger products, but generally make a decent little fridge magnet, if nothing else.
Anyway, I now have 32 of these pieces in my laughingly-named ‘store‘. A lot of these are Doctor Who related, some are Red Dwarf. There a couple of portraits of Musicians and Celebrities, and some Cartoon and Comic Characters. I get around 20% of the cost of these products, so it’s not a lot, but it would be nice to earn a little bit of money from my artwork.
For your amusement, here’s a list (with links) to the pieces for sale. And if you don’t want to buy anything (though it’d be nice if you did),you can have a look at all my artwork in my Gallery.

So there we have it. Do have a look. Maybe someone you love would like an Uncle Pigg mug for Christmas, or something… ;)
Went to a pub over the other side of town last Saturday (well, two bus journeys away, anyway) to meet a load of girls. No, really. I don’t generally go to pubs. I don’t really ‘do’ socialising, as I don’t have a great many friends in real life – I talk to everybody online, and meet very few people face to face.
Anyway, for the last couple of months, we – a number of former BTEC Performing Arts students at Norton College – have been talking via Facebook about getting together for a ‘Reunion’. The date of May the Fourth (be with you…yeah, yeah, whatever) was settled upon, and at 4pm (in order of arrival) Jenny, Lindsay, myself, Natalie, Shelley, Faye, Anna (who’d ‘arranged’ the get together in the first place) and Angelina assembled at The Broadfield pub for a few drinks. There were other students – I wasn’t the only male on the course, though I was one of only six (the other five being unable to make it due to working, being otherwise engaged, not being invited, or, in one rather worrying case, suffering a heart attack earlier in the week – get well soon, Steve) – but we were the only ones brave enough to gather again, in our thirties, some sixteen years after we first met.
I do have to watch my alcohol consumption, and, no doubt due to the fact I hardly ever drink, I was already fairly fuzzy-head after just two hours and three pints (I had planned to stop after two, but Lindsay gave me the money for drinks, and wouldn’t take the change off me, so I made the most of it).
I had to leave at 7pm – the whole ‘going out’ thing is a bit of worry, (what with the whole ‘being prone to throw myself onto the floor’ thing and whathaveyou), so we don’t like to tempt fate too much – but a fantastic time was had by all (certainly by myself – I even missed Doctor Who to attend this gathering), and I believe everyone carried on for the whole of the rest of the day – I know lots of alcohol was consumed, and Jen, Faye and co were still going at gone midnight.
So that was the main event of my week. In Comics news, I’ve bought a Beano or two, and updated my list accordingly.
And I did a little scribble earlier today of The Cat from Red Dwarf. Took a photo, Tweeted it, and was duly RT’d by the man himself, Danny John-Jules. Which was nice.
Almost made me forget about not being able to attend The Red Dwarf Fan Club Convention, Dimension Jump XVII, at the weekend.
Almost. Not quite.
Today is the 25th Anniversary of the first episode of Red Dwarf. I finally ordered the Red Dwarf episodes and submitted them to G&T’s Silver Survey a couple of weeks ago.
